About

The Tigray Humanitarian Crisis Website is dedicated for deliberation and documentation of official debriefing of humanitarian situations in Tigray on weekly basis by different sectors of theGovernment of Tigray. The primary focus of the weekly briefing will be on the health crisis and the man-made famine. The briefing will also include the impact of the indiscriminate air and drone attacks on civilians, and the impact of the prolonged siege on agricultural production, electricity, water, cash, transport, and other socioeconomic disasters. The Website is managed by Tigray Health Bureau (THB).

Background

The war on Tigray, which started in November 2020,is a ruthless, multipronged assault on the Tigrayan civilian population, including the indiscriminate killings of civilians, systemic rape of women and girls, territorial annexation and ethnic cleansing, complete siege, and engineered mass starvation.Tigray invasion by the allied forces of Ethiopian National Defences forces (ENDF), Amhara militia, and Eritrean forces. Food reserves and crops, as well as livestock and farming implements, have been looted or destroyed while medical and food aidare blocked from reachingTigray affecting the entire 7 million population. Farmerswereprevented from farming, putting millions at risk of famine with long-term consequences. Adding the deliberate disruption of water, electricity, banking, and communication services, and the looting and destruction of health, education, agricultural, and manufacturing facilities, these compounded effects of the war have decimated Tigray’s economy and put the lives of millions of Tigrayanson the brink of catastrophe. With >70% of the health facilities destroyed and looted, and stockouts of medical supplies, the health system has completely collapsed. Many patients with communicable and non-communicable diseases are dying in mass for a lack of access to any form of medication. Owing to the blockade of humanitarian, the man-made famine affecting >1,000,000 is also taking its toll, particularly affecting children, women and the elderly.
